1. A practice chanter (NOT a “pipe chanter”) to learn fingering the notes. If you’re taller than 4’10,” get a “long” chanter. Children can use a "short" (or "standard") chanter. I recommend plastic (usually delrin) – it won’t break (African Blackwood will). Good brands are Naill, McCallum, Dunbar, Kron, and Walsh

2. College of Piping Tutor One (or “The Green Book,” as we pipers call it), which comes with a CD. I sell them for $32. 

Don’t buy a set of bagpipes without my help! There’s lots of junk out there, and you’ll get frustrated trying to get them working...

Lessons are $140 for 4 one-hour lessons, held once a week in my studio in Berkeley,

or $45 for a single lesson.
